The Significance of Canada Day

Canada Day, which falls on July 1, is a national holiday that celebrates all things Canada and is a time for Canadians across the country and the world to show pride in their country’s history, culture, and achievements. 

How Did Canada Day Start? 

Canada Day celebrates the joining of the country's original three provinces, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Canada province, which we know today as Ontario and Quebec. On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act was passed, and the Dominion of Canada was officially established within the British Empire. The day was initially known as Dominion Day, but in 1982, it was renamed Canada Day after the partition of the Canadian Constitution, which gave the country complete independence. 

Is Canada Day Similar to Independence Day in America? 

Canada Day and Independence Day in the U.S. are both holidays that celebrate each respective country gaining independence. The holidays are also similar in how they’re celebrated with things like fireworks displays, barbeques, parades, and festivals. During both holidays, which fall just a few days apart, you’ll find each country’s respective flags flying high while people show their patriotic pride.
