Meet Bryan College graduate Akoto Sugiura. Akoto recently graduated from the Advanced Medical Spa Therapy diploma program. Akoto, an international student from Japan, was looking to add skills to complement the physiotherapy license he obtained in Japan. Akoto's ultimate goal is to be able to open a salon in Japan, where he lives.
Akoto was living and working in Toronto and wanted to add aesthetic skills to his already strong skill set and learn English. He researched Bryan College and liked that the school was affordable, especially for an international student like himself. He could learn about a skill he was interested in while immersed in English.
"I was looking for a program that would let me study aesthetics and learn English, and it would not be too long since I have a family in Japan that I care for. Bryan College was all of those things."
Akoto felt at ease when he came to campus to tour the school and meet with instructors.
"I talked with the school staff; everyone was very kind, and I loved the atmosphere. They were very supportive, and it made me feel comfortable. That is the reason why I decided to attend Bryan College."
Akoto enjoyed his coursework and felt the program covered the foundations of medical esthetics. He especially liked learning about skincare and the different machines aestheticians use, such as Microdermabrasion and IPL machines. For Akoto, the medispa experience was beneficial; during this experience, students in the program could perform different techniques on clients.
"The medispa experience was good because we went through the whole process with the ‘client’ - which would be a classmate or a model we brought with us. We would explain the procedure, do a consultation, and obtain the ‘client's’ consent."
Akoto found his instructors to be very knowledgeable and supportive. He liked that his instructors provided a mix of theory and practical experience when instructing. He felt they were accommodating and open to all his and his classmates' questions.
Akoto's experience at Bryan College exceeded his expectations and provided him with a strong foundation and training.
